MANILA, Philippines – Reigning UAAP men’s basketball champion UP is sparing no effort in its quest to contend for more titles in the coming years.

The Fighting Maroons on Thursday, March 6, announced the acquisition of James Payosing, an NCAA champion and a Finals MVP with San Beda, all but ensuring the future of their backcourt.

Payosing will be eligible to play starting in Season 89 next year, just in time for a UP side set to bid goodbye to guards Harold Alarcon, Gerry Abadiano, Reyland Torres, Terrence Fortea, and Janjan Felicilda.

“James is one of those who will make sure that our fight will continue even when our current champions are gone,” said Fighting Maroons head coach Goldwin Monteverde in Filipino. “We are very excited to have him.”

Payosing made a name for himself when he played a pivotal role for the Red Lions’ championship run in Season 99.

He averaged 9.7 points and 12.7 rebounds for San Beda in the best-of-three title clash against Mapua and claimed Finals MVP honors.

In Season 100, Payosing put up 7.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 1.6 assists, although the Red Lions failed to defend their crown after a Final Four defeat to St. Benilde.

Payosing will serve a one-year residency and will have two years of UAAP eligibility. – Rappler.com
